SCIENTIFIC ENTREPRENEUR in RESIDENCE Program

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Scientific Entrepreneur in Residence (SEiR) Program?

Flatiron Bio's SEiR program offers entrepreneurial scientists an opportunity to develop ideas into startup companies.

What types of ideas are suitable?

The best ideas will have these characteristics:

• Innovation: using new approaches

• Significance: addressing an important human need, such as preventing or treating disease

• Tractability: providing a path to product that has manageable risks and timelines

• Value generation: enabling a growth business, with attractive timelines, and market opportunities

Examples of potential projects:

• A first-in-class drug to treat cancer, autoimmunity or infectious disease

• A method for tissue- or organ-targeted drug delivery

• A novel technology platform for drug discovery

• A bioengineering process with commercial potential

What if I don't have an idea?

While most SEiRs will work on their own ideas, Flatiron Bio has a limited number of project ideas suitable for SEiRs with exceptional entrepreneurial potential and expertise in molecular immunology.  If you are interested in these ideas, tell us why and share your resume.

Who can become an SEiR?

SEiRs combine scientific excellence, entrepreneurship and a passion for building, with attributes including:

• Dedication to advancing human health and well-being

• Deep expertise in immunology, or the biological fields important for your own idea

• Ability to both plan and execute complex projects

• Collaborative and team-oriented working style

• Enthusiasm for solving health problems through new company creation

What does the Program provide?

• Salary for 6-18 months (depending on project need, with the goal being to launch a NewCo thereafter)
• Lab facilities (in San Carlos, California)
• Funding available for project costs (experiments, CRO services, IP etc.)
• Mentorship & partnership in developing ideas and business plans
• As appropriate: co-founders, team-building, fund-raising

What happens at the end of the SEiR program?

The goal of the program is to turn the best projects into new startups.  Flatiron and the SEiR create a new company together (although neither is obliged to)  The SEiR often takes a full-time leadership role at the company.  Flatiron can continue to support the company (with fund-raising, strategic planning, recruitment etc.).
